Mark Luton is based in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, on the lands of the the Bindal and Wulgurukaba People. His mother was a potter in Mackay, Queensland. He moved to Townsville for a primary school teaching post. He left teaching to become a full-time potter in 1990.
Mark was an active member of the North Queensland Potters Association for many years. He had an eclectic interests, including gas firing, wood firing, and pit firing stoneware clay bodies. He returned to regular employment in the year 2000, divesting himself of all his equipment and stock.
Mark returned to pottery early in 2024 as the inexorable yearning to create became stronger, the closer he got to retirement age.
